Kolio Plachkov
3rd/Associate Principal
Kolio Plachkov is currently the Associate Principal/Third horn of the Colorado Symphony and enjoys performing solo recitals with his beautiful wife and pianist Anna Song. During the summers, Mr Plachkov resides as the horn faculty at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. He previously served as principal horn for the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Arts Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center, the New World Symphony, and the New York String Seminar Orchestra in Carnegie Hall.
After receiving his Bachelor Degree of Music from the Juilliard School, Mr. Plachkov obtained the principal horn position with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, meanwhile pursuing a full time Masters of Music degree at Rice University.
Mr Plachkov has performed as a soloist with Idyllwild Arts Orchestra, Arts Symphony, The Broadway Bach Ensemble, among others. He made his debut recital in the United States, in Norfolk Virginia, which was broadcasted on NPR through the radio show “From The Top”. As a chamber musician Mr Plachkov has performed as part of the Bulgarian Concert Evenings where he has performed at the Bulgarian Embassy for the Bulgarian General Council.
Mr Plachkov was awarded numerous prizes including winner of the 4th National Competition for French Music in Plovdiv Bulgaria, Winner in one of the most prestigious International competitions in Kishinev, Moldova “Eugene Coca”. Shortly after coming to the United States Mr Plachkov won second prize (no first prize awarded) at the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition, and Winner of the Redlands Bowl Instrumental Competition.
