Terry Smith

A percussionist with the Colorado Symphony since 1980, Terry Smith has a diverse background as a performer, educator and small business owner. He taught at the University of Colorado from 1985-1990, after completing his doctorate there in 1984. Previously, he taught five years at the University of Wisconsin, and one year at the University of Michigan. As a teenager, he played drums with rock bands in Denver. From 1996 until 2000, he led Mallet Works percussion group, and from 1992 until 2005, he played tenor pan with Pan Jumbies steelband. He has also played with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Opera, Santa Fe Opera and Festival de Opera de Las Palmas (Canary Islands, Spain). While still in college, he started Bill Bueno Mallet Works, a small manufacturing firm. In 1996, he started Colorado Ensembles LLC, a booking agency that provides live music for special events. On August 28, 1989, Smith filed articles of incorporation with the Colorado Secretary of State to create the Colorado Symphony. In his spare time, he enjoys biking, tennis and cruising. He and his wife, Christy, were married in 1975 and together they have raised two daughters.
