Colorado Symphony: Meeting the World Stage Once More

The Colorado Symphony’s Spotlight showcased on the evenings of March 20th, 21st, and 22nd at Boettcher Concert Hall featured a premiere of a new spotlight: Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet- set to be performed for a world premiere.

Music Director Peter Oundjian hand-selected highlights from Romeo and Juliet in a specially curated suite for the concert hall, emphasizing the retelling of the famous “balcony scene,” and the intensity of The Death of Tybalt. In the first half, the world premiere of American composer Christopher Theofanidis’ latest composition was commissioned by the Colorado Symphony. This concert featured Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and guest Svet Stoyanov, “one of the most important artists and pedagogues in the percussion world today” according to The Denver Arts Complex promotional of the performance.

While the Romeo and Juliet showcase gathered the most attention in terms of promotions and advertising of the Colorado symphony performance, my personal commentary highlights Christopher Theofanidis’ Gemini Sun: Concerto for Violin. Christopher Theofanidis is an American composer whose works have been performed by leading orchestras from around the world having received an education at Yale University, specifically in their School of Music. The Gemini Sun features four songs, formulating into a story and emulated through a moving piece of music.
