Jeff Goldblum and all his jazz coming to chill with Colorado Symphony

It has been suggested that the essence of movie star Jeff Goldblum‘s enduring appeal lies in his ability “to weaponize his eccentric authenticity and intense likeability.”

Many have tried to capture the Goldblum secret sauce with similarly fancy words. But it essentially comes down to this: He makes nerds look cool.

Goldblum is a gangly, stammering agent of chaos who at 73 remains fully and unapologetically himself. He’s eccentric. He’s unbearably charismatic. He seems genuinely friendly. And he always looks like he’s having the time of his life.

You know him from “The Fly.” You dig him from “The Big Chill.” You love him from “Independence Day,” “Jurassic Park,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and even “Wicked.”

But he’s also a jazz pianist. And c’mon: that is just cool.

Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra are performing Tuesday (Oct. 13) at Boettcher Concert Hall in support of their new album, “Still Blooming: Night Blooms,” which I say missed a golden opportunity for a clever variation: “Still Bluming: Night Blums.”

In addition, “We are going to be playing some of our favorite jazz standards, and a few musical surprises along the way,” Goldblum said in a promotional video provided by the Colorado Symphony. “It is going to be a wonderfully fun evening.”
