Q: You have deep Norwegian roots, and this program features music by both Johan Svendsen and Jean Sibelius. What makes Nordic repertoire particularly meaningful to you, and how does your Norwegian background shape the way you approach this music?

Rune Bergmann: A lot of the Norwegian music from the Romantic period was very influenced by folk music and songs picked up from the countryside of Norway. In Svendsen’s overture, you can even hear influences from the Hardanger fiddle, one of the most popular folk instruments in the country. In the music by Sibelius, we can always hear his deep national Finnish voice. He will take us from the deepest forest through hope, despair and rough weather throughout his symphonies. Growing up in Norway and living in Finland for many years during my studies at the Sibelius Academy gives these composers a special place in my heart.

Q: You’re sharing the stage with Garrick Ohlsson, one of the great pianists of his generation. What makes him such an ideal artist for Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, and what are you looking forward to most about collaborating with him?

Rune Bergmann: I have been lucky to work with Garrick Ohlsson many times. Not only one of the greatest musicians, but a wonderful person and human being that I always love to cooperate with. Not only does Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto need amazing technique, but it requires a wonderful and musical soul with life experience. Garrick Ohlsson was born to play this music, and it will for sure be a magical concert!

Q: This program moves from the exuberance of Svendsen to the brooding atmosphere of Sibelius and the sweeping Romanticism of Rachmaninoff. What do you hope audiences feel as they experience this musical journey?

Rune Bergmann: This concert contains everything we need in life. It challenges us, but also gives us time to dream, relax and heal. I give the program a 100% satisfaction guarantee. It’s put together as a healthy meal that contains everything from vegetables to desserts.

Q: You’ve conducted the Colorado Symphony several times over the past few years. What keeps bringing you back to Denver, and what is it about this orchestra and its musicians that makes you excited to return?

Rune Bergmann: It’s always a great pleasure to come back to Denver. A great city that always makes me feel like home, and your amazing orchestra that always gives 100% to bring the best music and experience to the audience. For me, that is the most important quality I look for in a symphony orchestra. It feels like a dream team coming together, and I remember each unforgettable concert we have done together and can’t wait to be back with the dream team very soon.
