Sam Macken (he/him) serves as the Development Events and Membership Manager at the Colorado Symphony, where he oversees donor events, manages key membership groups—including the Colorado Symphony Guild, Women of Note, Crescendo Society, and Luminary Society Silver Level—and supports the Development department’s initiatives with a strong focus on donor engagement and recognition. Before joining the Colorado Symphony, Sam was the Development Associate at the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. With extensive experience in fundraising and donor relations, he brings a deep commitment to building meaningful relationships in support of the musical arts. Sam is particularly passionate about increasing access to music in rural areas across the country.
In addition to his work in arts administration, Sam maintains an active career as a professional bassoonist. He has served as the second bassoonist of the Bozeman Symphony since 2021 and freelances with ensembles including the Colorado Symphony, Boulder Philharmonic, and Tulsa Signature Symphony, among others. Sam holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa, a Master of Music from the University of Oklahoma, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. His doctoral research focused on the pedagogy and analysis of bassoon works by Native American composers.
He finds joy in connecting with fellow music lovers and is grateful to work alongside such a talented team to help ensure the future of live symphonic music in Colorado. Outside of work, Sam enjoys hiking in Colorado’s backcountry. He is a proud citizen of the Cherokee Nation and was a contestant on Jeopardy! in May 2025.
